Ruben Vlot (1988) is al van jongs af aan veel in de natuur te vinden. Opgegroeid naast die Biesbosch heeft hij samen met zijn tweelingbroer heel wat uurtjes doorgebracht in dit gebied, op zoek naar vogels. Maar ook tijdens vakanties ging de verrekijker altijd mee. Aangetrokken door het avontuur maakt hij samen met vrienden een aantal bijzondere vogelreizen. Ook zijn studie International Water Management heeft hem op bijzondere plekken gebracht, zoals Vietnam en Papua Nieuw Guinea, waar ook de vogels voldoende aandacht kregen! Na zijn studie verhuist Ruben samen met zijn vrouw naar China om hier 1,5 jaar te werken in een guesthouse in een prachtige natuurlijke omgeving. Hier maakt hij de gasten graag enthousiast voor de natuur en met name de vogels die in de nabije omgeving voorkomen. Na wat omzwervingen door Azië keert hij weer terug naar Nederland. Inmiddels werkt Ruben voor een ontwikkelingsorganisatie, en is hij met enige regelmaat in Afrika of Azië te vinden. Daarnaast maakt hij ook met z'n jonge gezin graag verre reizen. Recente reizen gingen naar Costa Rica, Oeganda en Australië. Ruben deelt graag zijn enthousiasme voor vogels met anderen en is daarom met veel plezier reisbegeleider bij BirdingBreaks!

Waar komt jouw interesse in vogelen en de natuur vandaan?
Al van jongs af aan kijk ik samen met mijn tweelingbroer naar vogels. Het is ooit begonnen in de Biesbosch, toen ik zes jaar was. Een oom van mijn vader nam ons mee met een bootje de Biesbosch in. Ik kan me nog herinneren dat we een Groene Specht zagen. Dat is mijn eerste bewuste kruisje in mijn vogelboek. Blijkbaar heeft die soort zo’n grote indruk achter gelaten, dat ik daarna nooit meer gestopt ben met vogels kijken.
Wat kunnen reizigers van een reis met jou verwachten?
Als reisleider ben ik vriendelijk, betrokken en doe ik mijn best om iedereen een fijne reis te bezorgen. Ik vind het belangrijk dat de sfeer goed is, dat verwachtingen helder zijn en dat er ruimte is voor ieders beleving. Samen genieten van de natuur en mooie vogelmomenten delen, dat is voor mij waar het om draait. Mijn enthousiasme voor vogels breng ik graag over op de groep, op een ontspannen en persoonlijke manier. Voor mij is er weinig leukers dan samen met andere natuur- en vogelliefhebbers de wereld te ontdekken, alsof het één grote speeltuin is. Dat kan in de Hollandse polder, of diep in de tropen. Vogels zijn overal. Je hoeft alleen maar te kijken, te luisteren en je te verwonderen!
Favoriete bestemming?
Mijn favoriete bestemming is Azië, en dan in het bijzonder China. China heeft mijn hart gestolen nadat ik er twee jaar heb gewoond. Het is een land vol contrasten, met naast de drukke steden ook indrukwekkend mooie natuur en prachtige vogelsoorten. Vooral de familie van de fazanten spreken me erg aan!
Dichter bij huis ben ik vaak te vinden in de Biesbosch, praktisch mijn achtertuin. Het is fantastisch dat soorten als de Zeearend en Visarend daar weer broeden. Varen door de kreken voelt soms alsof je in een stukje Nederlandse Amazone bent. Je hoeft niet ver weg, om er helemaal uit te zijn!
Wat staat er nog op jouw Birding- of natuur-wensenlijst?
Een soort die ik echt nog heel graag eens zie, is de Sword-billed Hummingbird. Na een aantal bezoekjes in Midden-Amerika, ben ik fan van de kolibries. Een bezoek aan Peru, Ecuador of Colombia staat daarom nog erg hoog op mijn verlanglijst. Naast deze fantastische kolibri-soort, is dat vanwege de enorme biodiversiteit natuurlijk een speeltuin voor vogelaars.
Daarnaast heb ik, samen met mijn vrouw, al een spaarpotje om ooit naar Antarctica te gaan. Met een jong gezin, zit dat er de komende jaren niet in. Maar zodra we de mogelijkheid hebben, hoop ik ooit nog een cruise naar Antarctica te mogen maken.
Wat is je mooiste/leukste herinnering aan het gidsen van een groep bij BirdingBreaks?
Oog in oog met het kleinste vogeltje ter wereld, de Bee Hummingbird, in de achtertuin van een trotse Cubaan. Met een hele groep vogelaars gefascineerd en bijna ontroerd staan kijken naar dit 5 centimeter kleine juweeltje.
